A "dolmen" that isn't one
The "Dolmen de Sem" is one of those sites whose official name — reproduced on local tourist signs — does not match the geological reality. This site, nicknamed "the Palet de Samson", is not a true Neolithic megalithic monument: it is an erratic granite block, meaning a fragment of granite torn from the Montcalm and Bassiès massifs high in the mountains, then carried several kilometres and deposited here by the glacier of the Vicdessos valley during the last great Quaternary cold period. Its granitic composition stands in stark contrast to the local limestone, confirming its glacial origin.
The name "Palet de Samson" belongs to popular tradition: Samson, a biblical figure of superhuman strength, is frequently invoked in Pyrenean place names to explain the placement of rock blocks apparently impossible for ordinary mortals to move. Local legend holds that the giant Samson was playing with a companion from the village of Orus, throwing enormous rocks across the valley — and forgot one of his "palets" behind.
The geology of the Palet
The Vicdessos valley is a typical glacial valley, shaped into a trough by major glaciers from the high Pyrenean massifs. During the great cold periods of the Quaternary era, these glaciers tore fragments of gneiss and granite on their path, carrying them for kilometres before depositing them as the ice melted. Such erratic blocks are found at several points in the valley: at Sem, at Lapège (where they resemble false dolmens), between Vicdessos and Auzat, and even on the promontory of Montréal-de-Sos Castle. The Palet de Samson, with a volume of 2.5 m³, is the most spectacular of these glacial witnesses at Sem.
A heritage of local imagination
Even if the Palet de Samson is not a prehistoric monument, it fully belongs to the cultural and imaginary heritage of the Vicdessos valley. Signposted locally as a "dolmen" in respect for this tradition of use, it remains a natural stop in the discovery of this area's heritage. Our 360° panoramas taken in 2013–2014 document it in its natural environment, amid the characteristic landscapes of the valley.
