Miglos Castle

Medieval fortress

A fortress on its limestone spur

Miglos Castle rises imposingly on a limestone spur at 779 metres altitude, dominating the confluence of the Miglos and Vicdessos valleys. First mentioned in texts in 1213, it represents one of the most strategic fortresses of the Foix county in the high Ariège. Its square tower silhouette, outlined against the sky or emerging from morning mist, perfectly embodies the image of a Pyrenean medieval castle.

The lords of Miglos and Catharism

In 1244, Arnaud de Miglos was summoned before the Inquisition. He admitted to having received Cathar Perfects in his castle and having sent weapons to the defenders of Montségur — the Cathar citadel that capitulated that same year after a ten-month siege. This complicity earned him four years imprisonment in the dungeons of Carcassonne, illustrating the depth of Cathar presence among the Ariège nobility.

Conservation and current state

Listed as a Historic Monument in 1987 and owned by the Departmental Council since 1984, the castle has benefited from several lime-injection consolidation campaigns. These works are now complete. The site remains partially accessible: the surroundings, access path and part of the ruins are freely open to visitors. The AACM association organises cultural evenings at the foot of the illuminated castle, particularly during Heritage Days in September.

What you will see in our 360° panoramas

Our 360° panoramas taken in 2013–2014 take you inside the ruins — courtyards, halls, wall-walks — as well as around the castle grounds with panoramic views over the Vicdessos valley. The tour also includes the Romanesque church of Arquizat at the foot of the castle: a discreet but historically rich building. A complete exploration, inside and out, of an exceptional site.
